During the time our mill was shut down it was an extremely difficult period for the employees of Terrace Bay Pulp and the communities they live in. As an employer Terrace Bay Pulp was fortunate to have the support services available to our employees offered by Northwest Employment Works and the Terrace Bay – Schreiber Labour Adjustment Center. Those services provided the displaced workers with an excellent support group that were able to direct, advise and assist them in dealing with challenges they were faced with.
As a Company working towards restarting the mill after more than a year down we realized one of the many challenges ahead would be securing skilled workers, in particular Power Engineers. They worked together and supported our company needs for Power Engineers by accessing funding to set up a trainer and classroom in Terrace Bay to help displaced workers from the area acquire the educational knowledge to write the Power Engineering exams.
This was a great set up for the people as they were able to be home while taking the course. Terrace Bay Pulp was fortunate to hire most of those who took the course and to date we have placed four of the class members who passed the exams into the power plant. On behalf of Terrace bay Pulp I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Terrace Bay – Schreiber Labour Adjustment Center, Northwest Employment Works and Confederation College for all the support the displaced workers in the Terrace Bay – Schreiber and surrounding communities received.”
