The Maintenance / Kitchen Assistant will follow direction from the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor to assist with maintenance and kitchen duties. The Maintenance / Kitchen Assistant will work in accordance with the Building Codes, Fire Codes, Occupational Health and Safety Act, accessibility standards and the values and goals of the organization.

Duties:
MAINTENANCE
- Assist with preventative maintenance
- Assist with maintenance of the outside parameters of the building
- Assist with deep cleaning, floor stripping and waxing
- Perform minor general maintenance
- Perform painting, dry wall patching as per general building maintenance
- Lawn maintenance and landscaping
- Assist Maintenance Supervisor to ensure compliance with licensing standards and building codes
KITCHEN
- Basic food preparation
- Assist Kitchen Coordinator to execute weekly nutritious food menus that reflect fluctuations in volume of donations, diversity and dietary needs
- Assist with food procurement and waste management
- Assist with unloading food deliveries and organizing food storage room.
- Ensure the kitchen is kept clean and sanitary
HEALTH AND SAFETY
- Report all health and safety concerns to a representative of the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee.
- Take every reasonable precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of staff and clients.
- Ensure compliance with food safety legislation.
Qualifications:
 - General maintenance experience.
- Kitchen and/or culinary experience.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast pace environment.
- Diplomacy and respect for staff, volunteers, and the vulnerable population the organization serves.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of the complex nature of the population Shelter House serves and organization's guiding philosophies of client-centered care, low barrier access and harm reduction.
