Are you looking for an adventure and a different pace of life? We're hiring DOCKHANDS for Loch Island Lodge and Camp Lochalsh, our two remote fishing lodges on Wabatongushi Lake in the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. No experience required, just the ability to do physical work and thrive in a wilderness environment! Every summer we host a staff of 10-14 people between Loch Island Lodge (our central boat-in/fly-in operation, primarily American Plan) and historical Camp Lochalsh, which requires self-guided work. A team of 4-6 dockhands are scheduled, according to ability and managers discretion, between 3 daily dock shifts (6 AM-12 PM, 12 PM-6PM, 6 PM- Dark), the shore lunch, guiding, and assorted maintenance/groundskeeping tasks.
- You must be capable of physical labour and lifting and transporting items like propane tanks, firewood, lumber, and trash.
- You must be confident in operating a boat alone in various weather conditions (will train) as you will work between two lodges and five outposts.
GUIDING: Competent employees may be assigned guiding tasks at the discretion of management. However, all dock staff should possess or be willing to learn basic walleye and pike fishing knowledge in order to serve guests effectively. A passion for fishing, old or new, is a must!
DOCKS: Our fleet is made up of 18 cedar strips which require sanding, varnishing, and epoxy repairs. On each shift, fuel boat gas tanks, pump out boats, show guests how to safely operate an outboard motor, complete boat safety checklists with guests, and install swivel seats, fish finders, and trolling motors. Care for live bait. Clean out boats after guests depart. Dock airplanes and handle luggage. Educate guests on MNR fishing regulations. Filet and vacuum pack walleye, northern pike, burbot, whitefish, and speckled trout.
SHORE LUNCH: We run a daily fish fry out on the lake. Assist (and later go solo) with cleaning fish, mixing batter, chopping and prepping potatoes, packing supplies, setting up the shore site, starting fire, and frying food items over the fire. Serve guests and help them in/out of their boats. Clean up site, put supplies away, and do dishes.
MAINTENANCE: Assist with repairs to decks, docks, log walls, cabin foundations, plumbing, septics, water pumps, wood stoves, and propane appliances. Know or learn basic repairs to outboards. Transport gas, propane, firewood, and other supplies to outpost cabins.
ASSORTED TASKS: Answer phone and take messages, issue fishing licences (will train), paint cabins, cut grass, assist with taking trash to dump, assist with grocery order transport. On weekends and turnover days you may be assigned to pick up guests at one of our road access points.
 Mandatory Requirements
- You must be legal to work in Canada (citizenship or visa). 3
- You must complete the Pleasure Craft Operator Card online course (approx. $50 at your own cost) before the season starts.
- Speak, read, and write English - Lift 50 to 75 lb. items (firewood, food crates, water jugs, gas tanks, propane tanks)
- Work on feet for 4-8 hours per day
- Avoid use of alcohol, cannabis, and other substances during work hours
- Handle high-stress situations and timed tasks
- Focus and maintain high standards of quality when working on a team or alone
- Be accountable and sign off on checklists
- Enjoy spending time in the outdoors
- Above all, you can handle the unpredictability and isolation of living in a remote environment!
Having lodge, wildlife management, or maintenance/trades experience is a major asset but we can train any willing candidate. Most staff are college-aged so you must work well with the 18-25 years age range.
 The Wabatongushi Lake Advantage - Salary is $2300/month (based on 6-8 hrs/day 6 days/wk) with 4 days off per month. Average tips $2500+ in CAD/USD cash, group tips shared equally. No bonds or hidden deductions!
- FREE room and board on-site (includes laundry and satellite wifi/TV), FREE use of boats, fuel, live bait, kayaks, paddle boards. We want staff to go fishing!
- You do not need a Drivers License. The only certificate required is the Pleasure Craft Operators Card (but First Aid and Safe Food Handling are assets). Boat training is done with safe and easy 18 cedar strips.
- We do not fund travel but provide free parking or a pick-up at a transportation point (Sault Ste Marie, ON airport, Wawa bus stop, railroad flag stop, carpool).
