The Associate Director of Culture provides leadership and guidance aimed at helping SLFNHA achieve its organizational objectives in a manner consistent with First Nation ways of doing things. This individual ensures that the Culture of First Nation people are represented in the organization and promotes the values of the communities in the Nishnawbe region.  The Associate Director of Culture works as a strategic partner to the Human Resources Department, Organization and Board of Directors.

Duties:
  • Works with Human Resources and SLFNHA leadership in reviewing and creating assurance that “how we do things” is consistent to the culture and values of First Nation people and the communities that we serve.
  • Works closely with the HR Team and Policy Committee in the review of our policies, procedures and systems to eliminate systemic racism and colonial approaches that do not enhance First Nation culture or serve our community’s best interest.
  • Fully integrated and active in SLFNHA approaches to recruitment and selection. Assists in the development of strong communication links between FN communities and SLFNHA.  This includes the development of community education sessions in schools, job fairs, education support systems, etc.  Review of succession planning and talent mapping of FN employees within the organization.  Uses this information to create mentor programs, training programs and talent ladders to advance FN employees both internally and externally.
  • Develops and provides best in class First Nation Cultural Educational Training Program both at Orientation/On-boarding and enhanced program within SLFNHA.
  • Supports organizational committees related to health and wellness, and professional development.
  • Prepare and issue briefing notes, background documents, and discussion papers for review and discussion with the Director of People and Culture, CAO and Board of Directors as required.
  • Plans and provides organizational development strategy, direction, advice and counsel to the Executive Staff as needed.
  • Manage promoting processes and provide consultancy for managers.
  • Ensure that the organization and its employees operate ethically.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the organization Mission statement, philosophy and ethical standards.
  • Provide guidance for change management initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the people, culture, language and the health priorities of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout District.
  • Experience working with Indigenous leadership, health professionals and communities.
  • Ability to communicate in one or more of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux lookout District.
  • An understanding of Human Resources functions and leadership HR needs, or the willingness to learn.
  • An understanding of First Nations recruitment and capacity challenges, or the willingness to learn.
  • Previous experience providing training preferably in First Nation traditional/cultural topics.
  • A college or university degree in business, Human Resources or health services would be an asset but experiential equivalent could be accepted as determined by SLFNHA.
  • An understanding of the essential functions of Human Resources, or the willingness to learn.
  • Proven management skills and abilities in the areas of strategic planning and policy development, or the willingness to learn.
  • Good written and oral communications skills.
  • Must be willing to travel and able travel to communities in small aircraft, via winter road etc.
  • Priority will be given to a member from a SLFNHA community.
