The position will support students and the overall program delivery in the classrooms at Migisi Sahgaigan School. The Education Assistant will provide support to students to meet their unique educational, emotional, social, and physical needs. This position reports directly to the assigned homeroom teacher(s) and principal.

Migisi Sahgaigan School is located 20mins south west of Dryden, Ontario in the comunity of Eagle Lake First Nation.

Under the direction of the principal, provides assistance to teachers of exceptional students and/or students requiring additional assistance through program delivery, physical care, monitoring of progress and preparation of specialized program materials.

Line of Authority

The Education Assistant is responsible to the Migisi Sahgaigan School Board through the director, principal and Classroom Teacher/Special Education Teacher.


Under the direction of the Classroom Teacher and/or Special Education Teacher the Education Assistant shall:

  1. Implement programs designed for exceptional students and/or students requiring additional assistance or programming, guided by classroom and/or Special Education Teacher. Monitor and inform teacher of students’ academic, behavioural and/or physical progress.
  2. Explain instructions to students. Assist students with work assignments.  Schedules minor program changes to accommodate students’ needs.  Assist with monitoring of seatwork.
  3. Monitor students during one-to-one work periods, lunch periods and recesses. Escort students to/from classrooms during special activities and out trips.  Ensure students are situated at appropriate work area, desk, or table.
  4. Prepare, adapt, locate and obtain materials to provide additional assistance with learning needs of students, following program established by teacher. (I.e. – specialized workbooks and subject materials, talking books). Guide and encourage students in task completion and participation in activities.
  5. Administer specialized programs, as directed by appropriate resource (i.e.: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, life skills, speech/language, and work experience). Monitor progress, report problems and recommend program changes, based on observations. 
  6. Maintain students’ hygiene, personal and physical care (i.e.: feeding, toileting) and other assistance. Where appropriate, may provide hygiene instruction.  Ensure proper use and maintenance of specialized equipment (i.e.: wheelchairs, mechanical devices, and prosthetics).  May be required to lift/carry student.
  7. Assist classroom teacher with program planning and daily routine for exceptional and/or students requiring additional assistance or programming (i.e.: photocopying, displays, materials). Review materials and lessons for familiarization.  The main priority is to assist with student learning.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by classroom teacher/special education teacher or principal.

 Preferred Qualifications

  1. High School Graduate
  2. Postsecondary Graduate of 2-year child oriented Degree or Diploma field of study
  3. Experience working with children 4-12 years old
  4. EA, ECE, ABA experience
